The primacy effect (first few words in a series) and the recency effect (last few words in a series) vary amongst individuals which would be demonstrated through statistical analysis of the data we are gathering. The experiment that we have conducted is based on Glanzer and Cunitz (1966) to explore the serial position effect, which is the tendency of an individual to recall the first and last words in a series better than words in the middle of the series. The experimental group have the standard deviation value of 3.03 which is lower than the control group of 3.17 which suggests that the data gathered from the experimental group are influential to the mean value more than the control group.ĭear participant,We would like to thank you for participating in our experiment. The standard deviation calculated was to measure how spread out the words are, if they are reliable or not. The control group have the mean value of 4.56 which is higher than the experimental group of 4.48 which suggests that it’s easier for the control group to recall than the experimental group. The mean calculated was to present the average words recalled by the participants. The table (Appendix G) shows the mean and the standard deviation. The reason of the two sampling technique used firstly because of the environment of the researchers as there are many high school students who didn’t take psychology classes which makes them not having participant expectations that could lead to the low credibility of the findings and secondly because of the random allocation so there’s no researcher bias in determining the participant’s group. The sampling technique used in this experiment was the convenience and random sampling.
